I met with my Rep. Laura Friedman over the weekend. She spoke to our civics group, and shared a ton of important information, and insight. The bottom line: we MUST win the House with a significant majority. I’ve paraphrased her responses to the most asked questions. Q Why isn’t Jeffries doing anything. A Minority parties have very little legislative power. He is laser focused on the midterms because if we lose the House, Republicans could refuse to sit a Democratic president. It’s Pelosi’s greatest fear. Q But they can obstruct, stop voting for Republican bills and nominees. Grind things to a halt. A Again, the goal is to keep as many Dems in their seats as possible. There are a handful of Dems in swing states, who must represent their constituents. Many of them are demanding they vote on things. Going against them may weaken their position and would jeopardize the seat. Q Are Dems fractured or united? A They are incredibly united. They understand why Jeffries is “allowing” some to vote the way they have to. Q Why aren’t Dems making more noise? A Many are. But between the media downplaying anything Dem, and the Republicans having a massive media silo, THEY amplify what works for THEM, not for us. Q There are SO many issues that are critical. Why aren’t Dems fighting harder for them. A Poll after poll, nationwide, shows that there are only 3 issues that MOST Americans agree on: healthcare, food prices, housing prices. It doesn’t mean Dems don’t care about LGBT, Gaza, corruption, immigration, privacy, loss of rights, etc. But all those issues are secondary, in a must-win-the-House scenario. Again, the goal is to win the midterms, and we can’t do that with highly local, passion issues. Q What can we do? A GOTV. Register people. Help them focus on the big picture.
