That's just more tournament play though.
Instead of setting more difficult scenarios.

At the expense of narrative and scenario games.
Which is sad.

But I think Wargaming and Tournament Games are two different hobbies that share the same media.

Did 40k become a tournament only game with all the attendant nonsense of constant edition changes and models becoming obsolete because the players wanted it? Or because GW decided that template was more profitable?

And if my friend says "hey let's try this other thing" I'm going to say "sure thing friend!"
If they don't want to, are they really your friend?

Going to call BS on that unless your local store is actively hostile to anything other than 40k.
Terrain can be made from all kinds of stuff, don't need official overpriced GW kits.
There's piles of different figures out there, it's called on line shopping.

I also know many who have taken their 40k minis off to play Xenos Rampant and other games.
Same universe, just better rules. (And not having favorite minis taken out of the game)

I've talked to people who have had to deal with
"Man, this game sucks! The minis are too expensive, too complex to build, plus FOMO, and rules are terrible! "
"OK let's play something else!" (Indicates many alternatives)
"Nah, those are all lame and the miniatures are st00pid."

Wehraboos are so annoying

Yes, 40k has a real cultish stranglehold.
It's annoying.
It's angering when Wahmmer kids are very dismissive or derogatory of anything alternative.
"Have you tried it?"
"No, it's stoopid!"
"How would you know?"
Etc.
I play solo alot anyway. Easier to find opponents that way.

Also no Handwavium powered super blasto weapons.
Just rifles, machine guns and cannons.
So real world tactics work.

I like them a lot!
No magic, no Over The Top heroes and monsters, no genetically modified Space Nazis. No grimdark emo BS.
Just dumpy little guys trapped in enormous events.
