I like to show the evolution of this classification to the students to highlight the fantastic bioinformatics work of Kira and Eugene and co-authors but also to illustrate the rapid development in the field โ˜บ๏ธ.

Labโ€™s first paper is out!! We show the first structures of #Asgard #chromatin by #cryo-EM ๐Ÿงฌโ„๏ธ
Asgard histones form closed and open hypernucleosomes. Closed are conserved across #Archaea, while open resemble eukaryotic H3โ€“H4 octasomes and are Asgard-specific. More here: www.cell.com/molecular-ce...

I naturally only highlighted the archaeal aspects but there is so much more. Enjoy delving into this comprehensive story with a ton of data in it. Shoutout also to the Santangelo and Ferreira-Cerca labs that contributed to the archaeal side of things alongside the Grohmann lab. (3/3)

Massive team effort led by RNA modification guru Schragi Schwartz. Happy that the Grohmann lab could contribute in showing that dynamic rRNA modifications in hyperthermophiles are common & tightly regulated by temperature, with about half of all rRNA modifications changing in response to heat. You can get MSAs directly from AlphaFold DB now (alphafold.ebi.ac.uk). I also missed the FoldSeek implementation, which lets you search for structurally similar proteins direktly.

This saves some clicking around. Neat!

The Panoptes system uses decoy cyclic nucleotides to defend against phage - Nature The Panoptes antiphage system defends bacteria by detecting phage-encoded counter-defences that sequester cyclic nucleotide signals, triggering membrane disruption and highlighting a broader strategy of sensing immune evasion through second-messenger surveillance.

Our story describing the Panoptes bacterial immune defense system is now finally peer-reviewed and published today! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Uncovering the prevalence, key biogenesis enzymes, and biological significance of archaeal lipoproteins - Nature Communications Lipoproteins are major cell-surface components in archaea, but their functions and the lipidation mechanisms are unclear. Here, Hong et al. identify two proteins required for attachment of proteins to unique archaeal membrane lipids via thioether bonds, and demonstrate their importance in archaeal physiology.

Biogenesis and function of archaeal lipoproteins.

This takes me back. The first papers I published from my new group were on lipoprotein biogenesis in Streptomyces with @proftracypalmer.bsky.social about 15y ago.
