I was taking a school group around their local heathland and one of the children spotted this striking mushroom. I think it’s Verdigris Navel, which seems to be seldomly spotted. Can anyone confirm and I’ll let the school know they’ve got a champ nature spotter! πŸ„β€πŸŸ«

#Fungus #FungiFriday I have no idea what kind this is. It was growing on the underside of a fallen poplar. The bubblegum pink caught my eye.

One of the many benefits of Alder #trees Alder goblet #fungi grow on the old rotting catkins. They are tiny as you can see compared to the moss sporophytes. A similar fungi grows from the rotting cones.

Sometimes you can see just so many things, and completely miss out on something common that everyone else is enjoying lol. For me it was the yellow centre cannonball fungi. So finding them yesterday totally made my day :)

Here’s a Swallowtail larva exposing its β€˜osmeterium’, an organ found in the 1st segment. Victorian entomologists remarked on its β€˜pungent smell’, similar to rotting pineapple. Having found a bottle of pineapple juice left in my car (courtesy of a grandson) I can confirm that this is absolutely true!
