If translation *alone* took six months, the pay rate would be so huge, it'd eclipse the golden years of the 90s and every manga translator I know wouldn't be juggling 10+ series. But no, it's one of the quickest, cheapest parts, for worse and for worse. You're drawing blood out of a stone, dinguses.

This is so fucked. I‘ve really appreciated the variety of titles Seven Seas has licensed over the years, there’s really been something for almost every audience. But this is such a slap in the face. If AI becomes involved in their translations, a large portion of that audience is gone.

At least with FuniCrunchy, they haven't gone full in on using AI for translations...they're inching there & it sucks, but I feel like even they can tell doing that would be a death sentence. Especially as people are increasingly growing fed up with them and AI

sooo the claim that it takes 5-6 months for a human to translate a manga is bullshit.

It only takes me a few days--then ideally I wait a few days to reread the translation with a fresh mind and fix any errors and tweak the wording. So like, a week total. For quality, human work.

Hopefully there's clarification later, a company like Seven Seas can't afford being vague. Especially when it comes to AI. Regardless of whether they use it or not, people are going to be extra critical of their work going forward under the assumption that they MIGHT be using it

Based on the Nikkei article & the Seven Seas Press kit:

• Seven Seas themselves did not say they will begin to use AI translation for their titles

• Media Do who now owns Seven Seas mentioned that AI translation will be used to “Assist” Translators

stories are coming out that the 7s staff were completely caught off guard by the acquisition news. Non-0% chance they revolt over this or the new owners demanding they cram AI into everything

I look forward to them walking back this stupid idea once their titles start bombing into oblivion. Given how Seven Seas responded to that one infamously mistranslated manga, I imagine they'll be desperate to fix up their image if it happens with AI

And apparently at the Citrus Con panel the Seven Seas reps outright stated that they wouldn't be using AI in any fashion.

When combined with praising their independent status, Seven Seas management really failed its staff today.

I ALSO remember in the old fansubbing/scanlation days, there was an opposite side of "speedsubs/scans": groups battling for quality dominance.

There were large swaths of fans 'dedicated' to certain groups, and groups that were insistent on proper translation, timing, karaoke (!), etc.
