As ICE Street Raids Ramp Up, New Yorkers Stock Up On Whistles Taking a cue from Chicago, community groups have distributed thousands of whistles in recent weeks — a grassroots system people in other cities have adopted to help neighbors sound the alarm.

The code is not complicated. Short bursts indicate an ICE sighting. Long whistles indicate agents making arrests. If you hear the whistle and you’re undocumented, you hide. And if you’re somebody who’s not, you go to the street.

In my more cosmic stories, it is typically the realization of their powerlessness and meaninglessness in the eyes of the cosmos. Ultimately, they do not matter and there is nothing they can do about it, which is terrifying pretty much regardless of gender, I suspect.

I do a bit of all three, usually. My favorite example of leaning into it was a story called "Bethlehem Grove" where the hero was compelled by the masculine urge to protect the woman in the story, not realizing she was essentially part of the problem.

Archaeologist here. For 99.5% of human history (ca 300-400,000 years), we were peaceful (no war). There was conflict and smaller scale violence, but countless studies on the 119 known modern hunter gatherer groups show cooperation, negotiation, and peace instead of conflict. Please read books.
