Do you worry that you "make it weird" ... do you strive to "not make it weird" but you fail and fail and fail?

No longer! Today we will reject self-doubt. Jump in there; make it weird.

Make it weird on purpose.

If you read my crap on Bluesky, know that I'm not actually on that service but rather bridged to it. And the odds of that service getting yanked because of BS's happiness to host the new fascists are getting stronger. So if you wonder where I went, it wasn't me; I'm still here. BS should've [โ€ฆ]

Bonus content: this is the first paper on which Yanna Weisberg and I are coauthors. I met Yanna my first week of college; she was ahead of me and so freaking cool (still is). She went off to grad school, returned for a visit, and said to me, โ€œYou would like Minnesota.โ€

The proportion of study measures published from 1981 to 2022. A dashed line is shown at the median point, 2014. There are 9 lines shown representing the rough categories of the measures. Although overall publications generally increase over time, thereโ€™s no clear category of measures that emerges as dominant in the field at any time. The 9 categories are labeled: General power, Equity, Sexual power, Decision-making, Power outcomes, Control, Power processes, Power bases, and Individual differences

My favorite display item is unsurprisingly this swoopy boi, giving a snapshot of the various categories that these measures could be arranged into and how their prevalence in research has changed over time, with extensive heterogeneity and no clear dominance [โ€ฆ]

Screenshot of the video essay, which shows a man with short hair talking into a microphone with the following quote on screen for discussion at 16:45

โ€œIn a given year, there is one drowning of a child for every 11,000 residential
pools in the United States. (In a country with 6 million pools, this means that roughly 550 children under the age of ten drown each year.) Meanwhile, there is 1 child killed by a gun for every 1 million-plus guns. (In a country with an estimated 200 million guns, this means that roughly 175 children under ten die each year from guns.) The likelihood of death by pool (1 in 11,000) versus death by gun (1 in 1 million-plus) isnโ€™t even closeโ€

Reminder that intolerance of intolerance is not a paradox. Tolerance is not an absolute ethical stance, it is a social contract. If someone chooses to not participate in the social contract of tolerance, they do not get to benefit from it.
