May or may not have specifically set up a meeting near Liverpool St station so I could see the β€˜Coffee Pot’ on display today…

I am with you. I steadfastly refuse to create a TikTok account and this is the hill I am dying on.

In place for the #UKChampionship final. Hard to believe two greats of the current game - Mark Selby and Judd Trump - have never met in a Triple Crown final until today. #147sf #bbcsnooker

Plus an eye mask - even with the blind all the way down the bright green light of an emergency exit sign is very annoying.

Someone at DfT clearly forgot to translate Michael Peterson’s job title into English. Oops.

(He is the Board Member for Long Distance Passenger Transport)

This composition had eluded me for nearly a decade, but yesterday I was finally able to capture it. A train rolled through just as the Duquesne Incline was crossing over the tracks in #Pittsburgh, creating a picture perfect winter scene. It was worth the hours and hours I've waited over the years.

Nice to very briefly see Clan Line at Wilton Jct as it sat patiently waiting for the (late-running) SWR service I’m on to pass.

Also the fire alarm went off JUST AFTER FIRE. Nuts. Back in the venue now…

This is a new one. Never had a fire alarm go off mid-gig!

Your piece is one of those β€œwhy hasn’t anyone written this before?” stories.

That was a cracking day - he is as lovely as you’d hope / expect him to be. Being instructed by the fastest man in the word on how to ding a bell and indicate was a very surreal experience and the piece wrote itself.

Had a poke around Inspiration, the @railway200.bsky.social exhibition train, this afternoon since it is at WSR and I’m heading north anyway. Well worth the visit and the free GWR shuttle from / to Taunton was well-loaded, and not just with track bashers as I was expecting. (No new track for me)

Here’s my CHRISTMAS GIFT TIP. You can buy all Michael Palin’s books and DVDs and suchlike off his website, and he signs and dedicates the item for no extra charge. Don’t say I don’t give you nowt. (I did this for my dad, and he didn’t notice the autograph on his Ripping Yarns.) themichaelpalin.com

(You would think - given I went public about the plagiarism a week ago - the Daily Express might have updated the piece to, y'know, acknowledge the source, wouldn't you? Clearly wouldn't make the problem go away but it would make it less obvious at a glance.

... Of course they haven't.)

This travel writer's work was ripped off by national paper Daniel Puddicombe is embroiled in a battle with a British tabloid. Here's what's happened.

Didn't have "quote a The Last Dinner Party lyric in a work thing" on my 2025 bingo card.

Thanks to the ace @lottiegross.bsky.social & @stephdyson.bsky.social for asking me to write about the (ongoing) Express saga for Talking Travel Writing newsletter

Yesterday my partner and I counted all the ads along Chicago's Brown Line for "Friend," a company selling an AI chatbot pendant, and tallied how many of those ads were defaced.

Still working on a longer piece on this, but here's the quick and dirty: we counted 104 "Friend" ads total, 42 defaced.

Yes, I’m short-sighted and it is quite difficult to read the signs due to the smaller font.

Why on earth is the Express pushing this nonsense out? Surely the journalist could have checked basic facts and realised the story just doesn’t stand up? Or is this another example of the publication running AI-generated slop and sticking a reporter’s byline on it?

I could keep on pointing out errors but I’ll leave it at that. It took me not a lot of time to debunk this bollocks; I am currently on a train with dodgy mobile signal so I could have done this a lot quicker if I was at home using my laptop.

Later in the piece it says the bridge shortens the journey between Ningbo and Jiaxing…

Except neither place is on the railway line because they are both SOUTH of Shanghai as a glance at a map shows.

Clearly, neither are present on the route’s map.

Finally, the journey time isn’t two hours.
