There are actually parallel stories to Gwenfort’s from other cultures, including a super similar one in Irish mythology. If you want to dive into the scholarship, this book is surprisingly readable: The Holy Greyhound by Jean-Claude Schmitt was my source!
And thanks for reading Inquisitor!

The Inquisitor's Tale by @adamgidwitz.bsky.social is one of the most moving, thoughtful, & beautiful books I've read in a long time. Inspired by the Canterbury Tales & brimming with medieval lore & history, it blends adventure, humor, & heart with a plot that offers parallels to our own time.

Faithful Johannes

He remained true until the end
This trusted servant and dear friend
Who saved our king, although the deed
Forced him to slay a royal steed

A wedding shirt he had to rend
While knowing none would comprehend
To cure the queen, he made her bleed
He remained true

But poor Johannes had no friend
Who came to aid him or defend
When, in his rage, the king decreed
That he should be hanged with all speed
But in the Book of Life, they penned
“He remained true.”

I've never really written a rondeau before, but it felt perfect for this theme. It's a poem inspired by the story Faithful Johannes by the Brothers Grimm, as well as @adamgidwitz.bsky.social re-telling of it in his amazing book "A Tale Dark and Grimm"

They Had Never Heard of the Holocaust They had never heard of the Holocaust. I was standing in front of four hundred and fifty kids— fourth, fifth, and sixth graders—in Phoenix, Arizona.

"I told them some of what the Nazis believed: that they hated Jews, immigrants, non-white, LGBTQ+, and disabled people. Pretty much anyone who wasn’t a Nazi. The nods faded. The kids’ faces began to look uncomfortable and upset..." Must read essay by @adamgidwitz.bsky.social

Max in the Land of Lies by @adamgidwitz.bsky.social was just as great as Max in the House of Spies. I was enraptured as I followed Max on his grand adventure in Germany as a child spy for England. Read these two books if you need historical fiction with fantasy during World War II.
