County Government 101: Public Protection & Judiciary Committee (PP&J)

PP&J provides policy oversight for many of the county’s public safety and justice-related agencies, helping ensure they operate effectively, responsibly, and in alignment with county priorities.

The Dane County Board of Supervisors reaffirms its commitment to supporting youth leadership opportunities and ensuring that young people have meaningful pathways to participate in civic life and influence decisions that shape their communities.

The county board also recognized the contributions of the Dane County Youth Governance Program (YGP), a program dedicated to developing youth leadership through direct participation in county government.

February is Youth Leadership Month, and the Dane County Board of Supervisors has officially recognized this observance and highlighted the importance of youth voices, leadership development, and civic engagement in strengthening communities through the passage of 2025 RES-331.

P&F also reviews matters related to county employees, including positions, compensation, benefits, and workplace policies. The committee helps ensure county resources are used responsibly and in alignment with board priorities.

This standing committee plays a central role in developing the county’s annual budget. Throughout the year, it also reviews spending proposals, capital projects, contracts, borrowing, and financial planning, and makes recommendations before items go to the full county board for consideration.

The Personnel and Finance Committee (P&F) helps oversee how the county manages its annual budget, finances, and workforce policies.

🔔 Dane County is now accepting applications for a new Opiate Settlement Coordinator position within the Department of Administration. The county board approved the creation of this position to ensure the most strategic use of opioid settlement funds in our community.

✔️ Review and recommend updates to county board rules
✔️ Oversee program and policy evaluations conducted by the county board office
✔️ Review certain county executive appointments that require county board confirmation
✔️ Consider maps recommended by the Redistricting Commission

The duties of the Executive Committee include:
✔️ Provide oversight of the county board office
✔️ Oversee budget and policy matters related to the office of the county clerk, county executive, and the county office of civil rights
✔️ Establish county positions on state and federal legislative issues

The seven-member committee is composed of the county board chair, the first vice-chair, and one member from each of the other standing committees. The first vice-chair is considered the representative from the standing committee on which they sit.

County Government 101: Executive Committee

The Executive Committee serves as the principal policy body of the Dane County Board of Supervisors and plays a key role in guiding legislative priorities and governance.

The Dane County Board of Supervisors established the 13-member advisory committee through the passage of 2025 RES-205 in November 2025.

During the meeting, members reviewed the committee’s purpose and charge, discussed key issues such as land use, infrastructure needs, environmental considerations, and community impacts, and began outlining priorities for future discussions and public engagement.

This week, the Dane County Advisory Committee on Data Centers held its first meeting, marking the start of a community-focused process to impartially gather facts and provide recommendations regarding the economic, environmental, and community implications of data center development in Dane County.
