New chapter
Blank pages
How Act 3 of me ages
will be left for others,
their stories to tell
Pray, in reflecting,
they speak of me well:
At times, verbose,
in creative flair
Other times, reticent,
… a cupboard, bare
Always, I beg,
remember: I cared

the Wellington winds
eager to uplift grounded dreams
a parched spirit
… a wounded heart
But all he could do
was remember
the weight of his what ifs
were too much for weary wings
to overcome
and so he stands at the edge
with what ifs
that never whisper
“soar!”

Joy
Like summer
Too short …. magical
Then came the storm warnings
Flags by the lake of my dreams began to wave me home

So I fill my basket
with what was sweet and tart
refreshing … fulfilling
Preserve them for the spring when my heart

the salt, slowly wringing dry, my soul
… so I swam parallel to the riptides
that once carried me out
to the point of maximum distance from self
Ashore, I landed
sent back to try again
in the land of the living

having smelled the rot of death
within its belly once before,
I would not let it fool me twice consciousness eluded me
and I was pulled under
“for old times’ sake”
but always came the crash
the rogue waves
…decisions to be made
The searing sun
and birds of prey
hovered longer than I could dog-paddle

Ashore, I landed
air bubbles in the waters
the only sign of life:
damage from the breakers,
yet to be assessed
healing will be a lifelong endeavor
the sound of the surf
became my clarion call
self preservation,
my salvation; my grace
through Drake Passage
I ignored the lore of the Orca’s song
