Me teaching database consistency: "So these systems can prevent things like selling the same ticket twice." Me on a train "Yes looks like we both have the same ticket reservation on the same train. Computers mess up I guess." (Twice in a couple of months for two hour journeys.)

I blame Geoff Marshall.

Perhaps. I have a friend who regularly posted "bitcoin is a bubble" posts for several years. I just tracked them and said "its value increased by X since you last said 'bitcoin is a bubble' article". If you're sure, short it. The market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent.

"The stars shot madly from their spheres" - London has been watching Midsummer Nights Dream for more than 425 years. It remains surprising and joyful when done well.

The opt out was very much my point that possibility is part of the regulatory system. If he were building 1000 commercial jets I presume he cannot just "opt out".

I suspect simply that the regulatory need is not large because the number of passenger carrying subs is so low and the number of passengers per sub is low. There has been a larger incident with more deaths since but it caught the public imagination less.

Yeah. It hurts my ability to get and use grants but not my ability to do EDI stuff... Likely the opposite of any intent.

That is kind of you. Very good and interesting. We are being restructured painfully right now. Costs have been reduced but ability to actually do things is a casualty. Every complex financial interaction takes 50 emails and two hours. Desire to do productive things drops as a result.

"Careful Minister, she is trained in litotes and not afraid to use it." "The monster, I am still devastated from reading 'what late Saxon period weathered rock teaches us about this corrupt government'". "We must immediately underfund them for decades." "No less than they deserve."

The chart at the very end of that article is unexpectedly hopeful.

Yes I was generalising a lot. It is complex. Any course where the cost required is high when compared with the staff/student ratio (partly driven by demand) is going to be more loss making.

I not 100% convinced that government policy over decades has been driven by their terror that someone might deploy their humanities department honed cutting sarcasm in the Times higher.

We do it to ourselves to a great extent. UKRI funding has a lot of overheads - not clear to me how close to FEC it is precisely. Once you are away from this a whole bunch of schemes are "no FEC suck it up" less than half the overheads and we still go for the money.

But yes unis with few foreign students and no other sources or income will be forced by economics to be more "efficient" in the sense that they don't teach subjects with low uptake. Essentially get rid of much of arts and humanities and pile high the more saleable.

I don't understand your claim. The Russell Group argue the average UK student loses a them 1,975 per year. That is about 20% of the fees. A long way from covering teaching never mind more than just teaching. What am I missing - you understand this better than me.

You might want to reread this thread.

Yes I understood that. At the moment people seem very willing to swap provider for a very small improvement. So even in diminishing returns where 2x investment gets you 5% and the next 2x gets you 2.5% maybe the market follows you.

I am not arguing about the virtues of the OSA. I am contesting your claim that national internet legislation never works because the internet is international. I am contesting also your further claim that companies ignore national laws if they have no presence in that nation.

Depends how marginal? Deepseek shows architecture can trump increased parameters. Paying users seem willing to switch to the better model even if the increase is relatively small.

More generally it's long since demonstrated that companies serving content to a country obey that country's law on doing so or block that country. There's decades of proof of this happening. Your assertion flys in the face of what already historically happened.

04.08.2025 14:30 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

If by presence in the UK you mean staff in the UK your assertion is observably false. Companies with no UK staff already changed their behaviour to comply.
If by presence in the UK you mean serving web content to the UK then this is not a problem.

Russell group says the average home student loses a university Β£1750 per year (estimate from 2022 -- unfortunately the source doc seems to be a dead link).
wonkhe.com/blogs/fillin...

Fees do not reflect uni income per student. Germany has zero fees because general taxation pays per student.

04.08.2025 14:25 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

That is a different point. You argued it was impossible because firms would not change their behaviour in deference to local laws. Observably this is not what happened.

04.08.2025 13:00 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

That is demonstrably not true. Companies already change what they provide by country to comply with local law and have for decades. Whether you disagree with OSA is another thing but let us not deny observed current reality.

Agree. My intuition would be a 50% reduction might be possible and this rules that out.

If people believe "the alternative is talking to your neighbour" London is going to be a real hotspot for fascism. I'm already thinking "how workable is socialism in practice we need strong leadership" when you paint the other options so bleakly. (/s In case I is not clear).

Look at the CI though. They could be giving a 30% decrease or increase within that if I am reading the study right. Feels like an underpowered study? You do this kind of thing more than me though.

Don't even. Worse those people who are technically "on" a given network but ignore that one. "Oh that was my old email". "No I do not check that any more but I did keep my account." Not to mention those who will instantly debate signal Vs telegram.
