Southern Prayers Reprinted from Spring 2024 Killens Review of Arts & Letters

My (truly short) short story, “Southern Prayers,” was published last spring, but its message about the boundless power of Black Women feels worth resharing tonight. Hope it feeds somebody. 🙏🏽 3/3

“Plenty women livin and dead know this story too well, and nobody needs it set to music.”
Ms. Mabel appraises her warily.

“Plenty indeed,” she nods.

“My mama was one,” Twilight offers. “Who you know, Ms. Mabel?” 2/3

“Don’t nobody need you out there. You gonna write a song ‘bout this, too?”

Twilight stops in her tracks and turns to see Ms. Mabel approaching slowly with a slight limp in her left leg.

“Ain’t no song bout this in me,” Twilight answers solemnly. 1/3

I was heavy into that Lyfe album, so I’m gonna stay loyal to 20-year-old Jenn. Made Up My Mind and that duet with Fantasia both go hard — to this day!
