Lawmakers tour Florida’s new detention center in the Everglades Alligator Alcatraz was built into the Everglades just eight days and state officials said would cost $450 million to operate for one year.

More than two dozen state and federal lawmakers took a 2½ hour tour of Alligator Alcatraz on Saturday, arranged by the office of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R). It came weeks after several Democratic state lawmakers were turned away at the gate.
