On this day in 1582, the Gregorian calendar was instituted by Pope Gregory XIII with the papal bull 'Inter gravissimas'. Roman Catholic countries introduced the changes first, followed by Protestant states during the C18th. China did so in 1912, the USSR in 1918 and Greece in 1923.

22 Feb 1797 saw the last invasion of Britain.
1,400 French troops sailed into Fishguard Bay but were scared off by a cannon fired to sound the alarm. Instead, they landed at Llanwnda, but their short pillaging spree resulted in gorging & drunkenness & the local militia overpowered the invaders.
On this day in 1916, the #WW1 Battle of #Verdun began. German General Erich von Falkenhayn wanted to "bleed France white" during the 300-day battle.

OTD in 1971 Britain decimalised, replacing Β£sd (where 240d = Β£1) with Β£p (with 100p = Β£1). To prepare for the event, banks closed mid-afternoon on Wed 10 Feb.

13 Feb 1945 saw the first of four Allied bombing raids on Dresden. The air raids by the RAF & USAAF involved 1,299 bombers dropping over 3,900 tons of ordnance and resulted in firestorms killing up to 25,000 people.
