I've been on a healing journey for roughly 5 years now and I still struggle when it comes to forming deep connections because of my experiences and resulting internalized distrust towards new people. Unfortunately for people like me it is hard to tell when a "friend" circle is like that when you have nothing to compare to.. it took me finally trusting someone new after (I think) a decade of only surrounding myself with the same people basically daily; they showed me just how VILE my "friends" really are and what a REAL friendship should look like by introducing me to their friends. (I am forever grateful for being able to call this person one of my best friends) (in regards to your first reply) This is a great rule of thumb for people who are extroverts, but doesn't work for introverts like me; I'm always exhausted and drained after hanging out even if i had the best time of my life and would love to continue, but my energy is just low from being social. I think a better way to tell would be if you are looking forward to hanging out with your friends or if you feel like you're doing it out of convenience/because you're used to it or better(worse) yet, if you DREAD hanging out but you have "no other choice" (aka hate being alone/by yourself). That's at least how it was for me especially towards the end.. My final words would be to encourage anyone in a situation like this to take the leap.. even if it feels scary to be alone, because it'll happen eventually that you'll part ways and it'll be a lot scarier and harder to heal from this than to be uncomfortable for a while... you can do this!"
