Guì Zhōu or Guìzhōu Shěng is a province located in the southwestern part of China. The Changjiao Miao people live in 12 villages near each other, situated in the mountains 2,000 meters above sea level, with a total population of 4,000. On a typical day, the women simply wrap their hair behind their heads around a sharp-ended wooden board. They wear the long horns only on holidays and during festivals, together with the decorative hair bun made of linen, wool, and small amounts of ancestral hair.

Ly Ta May is the oldest of three sisters. She is twenty-four years old. Her mother, Cheo, kindly helped Ly demonstrate putting on her wedding dress that was handed down from mother to daughter. The Red Dao wedding dress is seen as the summit of success in a women’s sewing accomplishments. Mother and daughter are known to spend up to a year making nothing else but a brand-new ceremonial outfit in preparation for the big day.
