NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte calls the U.S. a "perfect democracy" on Dutch tv. 🤦

Mark Rutte wouldn't recognize a "perfect democracy" if it hit him in the face. Or care much about it, given his long career of weakening liberal democracy in the Netherlands.

It'll never be lost on me that a particular subset of the liberal commentariat in both North America and Western Europe were deeply infatuated with this woman up until the very moment she decided to talk about that one issue you're still basically not allowed to talk about lol.

Yeah, although I decided not to emigrate after graduating since that was a shit deal, even if I did and still do want to move abroad to work, moving to the UK as a migrant was not super appetizing

Does it mean that you have to pay for your whole uni as a foreigner, or just the first year?

04.10.2025 11:06 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

As somebody with a degree from a British university (admittedly one that was paid on scholarship), its insane how much unis are dependent on this shit rather than being domestically funded.

That's nuts. Even in the USA where universities are based on state residency, its shit like "having spent your last year in the state before starting uni" not the majority of your life, and you can often become in state while going to uni away from your home state.

Fairly easy to see current anti-immigration politics as a right wing phenomenon mostly pertaining to refugees. But it’s also worth remembering that this is taking place in a context in which the very idea of being a citizen is being dismantled even from people who live in the west

I have written about this elsewhere, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the three far-right coup attempts over the past half decade in the USA, South Korea, and Brazil; were done by far-rights heavily influenced by Pentecostalism.

Absolutely shameful hagiographies of Charlie Kirk by “liberals” like Ezra Klein and Gavin Newson. It’s like Fortuyn all over again.

It is perfectly possible to oppose the killing of people you vehemently and wholeheartedly disagree with.

"Harvard can't use race as a factor in admissions, but ICE can use race as a factor in detentions" is a retrenchment essentially to a pre-Civil War understanding of the Constitution. It's vanishingly few steps removed from "Latinos have no rights which the white man is bound to respect."

Incredible parallels in this Berinsky &
@gabelenz.bsky.social paper. Politicians didn't stand up to Joe McCarthy in large part because they incorrectly inferred McCarthy/ism was extremely popular. Not standing up to McCarthy was a kind of 1950s Popularism

As somebody who works on and off on official side campaigns, I generally think an attitude of “you lost one campaign you’re done” is quite toxic and I’m glad it doesn’t exist.

But instead Dems have somehow managed to turn it into “it literally doesn’t matter if you lose a campaign”

Popularism (talking about your best issues while campaigning) is broadly a good idea. I'd call this strategy Starmerism, which is governing while acting like you're going to have an election in a month instead of thinking longer term. You can see how that's working in the UK.

Democrats Bet Briefly Preventing a Health Insurance Apocalypse Is Good Politics Their ask in exchange for avoiding a government shutdown is an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies. What happens when Republicans say no?

Democrats seem to have made their decision: they want a (probably short-term) extension of ACA subsidies in exchange for passing a budget bill. In other words, they want something Republicans need in exchange for something Republicans want.
