It is killing us! I've seen the merits of blue books and in class open book exams for ca. 15 years, from survey classes to upper level seminars ... but this moment is brutal because every level of open-ended scaffolding can be turned to AI in some way/shape/form. How do you teach critical thinking?

Not enough people were talking yesterday--on Armistice Day, aka Veteran's Day--about the importance of peace + the threat of global & wider conflict. I've been writing about the global dimensions of WWI for some time, they helped to inspire modern peace movements www.huffpost.com/entry/armist...

Among many parts of university activities we need to be supporting in these difficult times, university presses should be toward the top. They are critical to the broader universe of knowledge production

"They could not have been encouraged that the President of the United States, Harry Truman, was known to have the prejudices of his community when it came to views of race. He used racial slurs, told racist jokes, opposed sit-ins and intermarriage and called Dr. Martin Luther King a troublemaker. Whether he would act as President as he felt in private was not the question. It was assumed he would follow the lead of most other politicians of that time period and not show sympathy for African Americans’ goals for equal treatment."

Been saying this for a while. Thought it isn't likely & won't be very public, it is clear LOTS of international "partners" of the US are sharing less + sharing selectively when it comes to intelligence that used to be easily shared w/US counterparts. Expected, understandable, & very dangerous.

I think the framing of this as the era of the third red scare might very well fit … tragically of course and with many historical differences

“Race ideology,” the draft of the proposal says, would encompass any concept that “attempts to shame a particular race or ethnicity” or “promotes activism on issues related to race or ethnicity rather than academic instruction.” The proposal would define “gender ideology” as “a concept of self-assessed gender identity replacing, and disconnected from, the biological category of sex.”

The proposal's definitions of "race ideology" and "gender ideology" are exactly as thoughtful and workable as you'd expect
