I’m a couple hours into Returns now, and I pretty strongly prefer the original! It’s rougher around the edges, but the original’s vibes are much more unique and interesting all around. Returns is almost overly polished in certain ways, so it loses some of its charm as a result (still great, though).

Sure, we may have recorded before yesterday's Nintendo Direct, but that just means we had more time to talk Xenoblade Chronicles X: DE, read up on the latest Monster Hunter Wilds news, and get a 10-minute two-minute history lesson on the origins of the Metal Max franchise. 8-4.jp/podcasts/202...

I finished Metal Max (Famicom) last night! I feel completely blindsided by how great it was. How did it take me this long to give it a go?

Anyway, one of my new all-time favorite RPGs. Can’t wait to check out MM2 and MM Returns!

An unusual mix of genres that is carried to greatness by a compelling plot—one built upon a well-developed setting and cast. Uniquely leverages the system's video capabilities.

Agreed that it’s too long for its own good! Blue Breaker is far from perfect, but I appreciate its ideas enough to make up for its flaws. And I respect HuneX’s smart use of limited resources to craft something that feels grander than it actually is.

Yeah, that’s not a great version of the game, but if you disliked it enough to use the word “hate,” I doubt you’d enjoy the PC-FX original. The core design is unchanged!

As much as I enjoy it, I’d hardly recommend it to anyone who doesn’t like the game it’s aiming to be.

It’s definitely a game that gets very little attention in the import scene!

It’s fun if you’re willing to take the time to learn the controls (which most people are not)!

It’s also very fast-paced and reflex-dependent, so I imagine any input lag introduced (from emulation, display, controller, etc.) will make it significantly harder than intended.
