Sleep spindles promote hippocampal network downregulation during sleep Sleep is thought to globally downregulate neuronal network activity and synaptic connections enhanced during prior wakefulness and, in parallel, to upโ€ฆ

I am very happy to share our latest paper, just published in @currentbiology.bsky.social! In collaboration with Olga Garaschuk's lab, we used in vivo 2P calcium imaging to investigate the role of sleep spindles in the hippocampus. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ค

I have been using Claude Code recently, and Iโ€™m now convinced that LLM coding agents can solve one of the biggest problems in neuroscience: technical debt.

Labs generate tons of low-quality code bc the incentive structure rewards short-term productivity over longer-term concerns like 1/

Schematic of how ER-EPG plasticity enables the bump of activity in EPGs to accurately track visual cues. As a fly makes a counter-clockwise turn (top to bottom) it will view visual cues (e.g. the sun) from a new angle and the EPG activity bump (red) will swing clockwise around the network by integrating self motion signals with these visual inputs. When the fly faces a different angle, distinct visual ER neurons are active. Plasticity forms a trough of weak synapses (large circles - strong synapses, small circles - weak synapses) that allow ER neurons with distinct visual tuning to move the EPG bump via disinhibition.

Hierarchical organization of mechano-nociceptive pathways revealed by activity labeling Noxious mechanical stimuli give rise to distinct percepts, from sharp cutaneous pain to diffuse visceral discomfort, yet the nociceptor ensembles that underlie these differences remain poorly defined....

Not all pain is created equal: stepping on a nail feels different from a stomachache. We know there are many nociceptor types, but a key question remains: how is mechanical pain encoded across the body by those sensory neurons? Our new work helps answer this. 1/8

That image is from 1961 and an idealization. Here is an actual trajectory of fixational eye movements. The dots are 2 ms apart. If a midget ganglion cell, with single-cone receptive field, fires at 100 Hz, then every spike reports about a different cone. How can we ever read anything?
