Coldest Day of the Year Ride 2026 Today was the annual Coldest Day of the Year Ride, organized by Cycle Toronto, with support from the City of Toronto and Toronto Bike Share. Given that it was on the last day in February, it wasn't the coldest day of the year thus far, but no one was complaining about the sunny and comparatively balmy weather. The start point was Sugar Beach.

RIP Giorgio Mammoliti Former City Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti passed away yesterday at the age of 64. He was an ally of Rob Ford and was passionate about his opposition to bike lanes. He was certainly one of the more colourful characters in his time at City Council, taking positions such as establishing brothels on Toronto Island, or in the afternative, opposing making a section of Hanlan's Point Beach clothing optional.

It used to be said that Toronto has only two seasons—winter and construction— but now we are clearly seeing an overlap. Dupont is closed in both directions just east of Edwin, including the bike lanes. Note that there is an open trench on the south side sidewalk as well.

We have several in Toronto, including one installed in 2017. That's the grandfather that was riding with his grandson.

Old Man Winter is not giving up Mother Nature didn't see fit to give us more than a couple of days with relatively streets and bike lanes. Although the worst didn't come to pass downtown over the past 24 hours, there was a lot of sleet and wet snow overnight. The bike lanes between Lansdowne and Ossington had been plowed, and so they were rideable aside from the usual windrows.

Bloor bike lanes again With all the melting back over the past couple of days, the Bloor bike lanes between Lansdowne and Avenue are in much better shape. In addition, we were told that the city is trying out some new equipment more suited to clearing the bike lanes. Here is the view at Shaw, where we finally see pavement. Sadly, the block between Christie and Manning is still not cleared.

Valentine’s Day bike lane maintenance TCBC put out another call for volunteers to clear bike lanes today. There were two crews at work. The larger downtown crew tackled the bike lanes between Bathurst and Manning. Here are some pictures from Joey and Albert. Photo: Joey Schwartz Albert Koehl Further west, David and Kelly were hard at work on the westbound bike lane near Runnymede. The major obstacle on this stretch has been this huge pile just west of Runnymede.

Not loving the clash of fonts in this picture. Note in particular that the large station name mimics the subway font, but the R is not consistent. It is helpful to have the street names below the station name, although I was amused that they did the same thing at Caledonia Station. #EglintonLRT

Line 5 is open! The Eglinton Crosstown AKA Line 5 finally opened today, after 15 long years since the groundbreaking back in Nov 2011. I decided to check it out from the western terminus at Mt. Dennis station. The fastest way for me to get up there was by riding to the Bloor UP/GO station, and then to take the UPX. Mt. Dennis is a new stop for the UPX.

15 year blog anniversary This blog started with this post 15 years ago, on a morning that was apparently warmer than today. (It's -19°C right now) Taking a look back, you can see that the traffic on this blog has ebbed and flowed, but is probably on a downward trend. This is perhaps because I mainly promote posts on Facebook, even as people have gradually shifted to more short form social media platforms.

Bike lane snow clearance is hit or miss When I went down to Bloor this AM, I was pleased to see the eastbound Bloor bike lane nicely plowed. Sadly, the westbound direction is still untouched. When I biked into work I thought that at least some of the rest of the Bloor bike lane would be plowed. Sadly, this was not the case. Here near Lansdowne. The only section that was clear was going east from Bathurst, where TCBC volunteers had cleared the lane.

The TCBC snow crew strikes again Albert and the other good folks at the Toronto Community Bikeways Coalition organized another snow clearing event, this time in the Annex over the past two days. Today, the goal was to clear the eastbound bike lanes between Brunswick and Spadina.
