If you check around record stores online, you might be able to get a physical copy. I’d recommend starting with the In Groove.

Probably my last grail for a bit (lord knows what roller coaster ride we’re all about to take) 1957-58 2nd mono repress of one the earliest examples of the hard bop style for about the price of an audiophile reissue. Great way to unwind on a Friday night after work. #jazzvinyl #vinyl community

Not the biggest Dylan fan, but I bought this 64 UK mono copy after seeing the movie. This mono recording is one of the most intimate sounding records in my collection. Listen to this and then Highway 61 revisited to get a sense of the fuss over Dylan going electric.

This was a Christmas present from my fiancé. A 4 record box set featuring Questlove as part of an avant garde jazz small group. Impressive in its inclusion of newer technology along with more standard jazz instruments. Recorded in analog. This is worth multiple listens. #jazzvinyl #vinylcommunity

I finally finished Emily Wilson’s translation of The Iliad. Highly recommended not only for the insightful essays but also the decision to translate into iambic pentameter. I recommend reading it while listening to the audiobook version for the rhythm. #booksky

Analogue Productions giving 4 previously released tracks by the same Miles Davis Sextet that created Kind Of Blue the love they deserved. My copy is the limited edition blue vinyl. Highly recommended.

I want to thank @natechinen.bsky.social for persuading me to buy this record. When I first listened to it on streaming, I was unsure but on vinyl this album is fantastic. Definitely will be on the regular rotation when I’m in a contemplative mood.

Last RSD post for the year. This is my 2nd BB King live album (the 1st being the immortal Live from Cook County Jail). I’m never disappointed.

This was my artifact buy for RSD: 1956 1st pressing of Elvis’ debut for RCA. In my 1970s East TN home, Elvis was my first exposure to music. Full stop. Elvis made singles not albums and this record is no exception. But to experience that energy he brought, you need to listen to him in mono.

For RSD Craft Records does a great service to jazz listeners by offering AAA mono cuts of titles from its portfolio of titles. Personally, I believe that jazz from the late 1950s through the mid-60s is best experienced in mono (stereo didn’t exist until 1958). Max Roach and Booker Little. Nuff said.

I love that record store she went to. I never walk out empty handed.

Next offering: do you have that friend with great taste in music who can pull together a playlist of deep cuts that are accessible and just sound natural together? Well, that pretty much describes the Jazz Dispensary’s RSD albums. This one is soul jazz & funk. Great soundtrack for get togethers.

Next, it wouldn’t be a Record Store Day without a previously unreleased concert from the Bill Evans Trio. The Trio’s lineups would change over time but the music was always at a high level. This record is beautifully mastered. Contemplative jazz.

Just got back from Record Store Day Black Friday. I’ll be sharing some of my finds. First up is a great record which I snagged at the last minute. I had not heard Sahib Shibab before but now call me a fan. More to come.
