Something that gets lost is that what you highlight in your day to day comms doesn't have to be what you run in paid. A member of Congress should talk about money they brought to the district for specific projects, the TV ads should hit Republicans on cuts to Medicaid that pay for Elon's tax breaks

This doesn't mean you can't also talk about tariffs and other ways Republicans are crushing the economy, you really can do both, and you should do both!

The reason why you have to talk about an illegal deportation, regardless of whether you're currently winning or losing on immigration is that you HAVE TO win the argument. If the government can send you to a gulag for any reason, nothing else even matters.

The Sopranos is probably the Rosetta Stone of modern American reaction: it consists of people who bemoan the loss of an imagined past they mainly got from movies, claim victimization based on identity but hate when others do it, and view the people who build the society they prey on as suckers.

America doesn't even have the lowest birth rate. Just get your basic facts right. I want my ridiculous exaggerations to come from Bill Simmons, not the government.

I mean very obviously Hegseth should resign, and if it were a Democratic administration this would be quickly be a consensus position.

Innocent people β€” undesirables, political dissidents β€” are being sent to camps here and abroad. A scapegoated minority is being persecuted, made an example of. Wrongthink is being stricken from government institutions and civil society. There is no more "if" authoritarianism arrives. It's here.

I’ve now watched this clip like 10 times and it’s instant first ballot hall of fame. One of the most comically out of touch things I’ve ever heard heard from a public official.

Trump’s commerce secretary Howard Lutnick says if Social Security skipped a check, his mother-in-law wouldn’t complainβ€”and if you would, it indicates you are probably a fraudster. Insane.

If the constitution is still in operation, Trump's executive order abolishing the Department of Education is just a suggestion.

If Trump can abolish the Department of Education with an executive order, then the constitution is just a suggestion.

think if you're a zoomer you're at a disadvantage here, because unless you were really paying attention in the obama years, you don't really have a *full* appreciation of the rank hypocrisy of the conservative propaganda apparatus today. just incredible stuff.

They absolutely could not possibly be clearer that they are going to try to cut Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security.

musk illegally seized control of the treasury and now wants to end social security and medicare and plunge tens of millions of americans into destitution so that we won’t go β€œbankrupt,” a thing that practically-speaking can’t happen

I know this is extremely vulgar idealism, but I do think we should try to aggressively reassert the norm that lying is bad. Not in a "Four Pinnochios" fact-checking kind of way, but in a way that frames this kind of lying as moral degeneracy that is fundamentally corrosive to the human spirit.

The stock market is not the economy. The stock market is not the economy. The stock market is not the economy.

Nonetheless, holy shit.

What’s remarkable is that there’s hardly any real news driving this. It’s just investors belatedly realizing that Trump is who he is, and always was.

Auchincloss to Rep. Tony Gonzalez after Gonzalez touts the popularity of DOGE: "Is it popular to cut healthcare for the 40% of kids in this country who rely on Medicaid to pay for tax cuts for people who don't need tax cuts?

Musk says millions of dead people get Social Security. That's a lie. Here's the truth: 30,000 people die a year waiting for an understaffed Social Security to approve disability benefits. Musk's plan to cut Social Security's staff by 50% will make this tragic reality even worse.

It's not new obviously, but seeing it framed this way in the NYT was jarring. It's presented as if he has constitutional authority, which he clearly does not.

It’s hard to explain to people that republicans think that disabled children subsisting on sub-poverty level benefits need to have a lower standard of living so a billionaire can get another yacht because it sounds too cartoonishly evil.

I don't think the chaos is the point, I think that's mistaking incompetence for savvy because you want to believe your enemies aren't doing politics in a way that you have to describe as "resembling The Three Stooges trying to get through the same door".

The best part of this is the implication that no one might regret their vote. "I won by 65 points, that means I can cut Social Security, fire every federal worker, and put their employer out of business consequence free."

Musk and Trump should have to face the hardworking Park Rangers they sacked.

I’m bringing Kate, who was unjustly fired from northern Minnesota’s Voyageurs National Park, to the State of the Union.

Whatever criticisms you have of Shor Thought, he starts from the premise that the math to win the popular vote (let alone the electoral college) is extremely challenging, which I think most people truly don't understand.

02.03.2025 03:46 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

And I think that's where the frustration with the party lies. Because Republican candidates are so extreme & so unfit, there's this assumption that we should never lose, but the reality is it's somewhat remarkable that we're able to compete at all given that in a good year we win 44% of white people

02.03.2025 03:39 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The electoral success of the party is a testament to it's political strength, and we constantly out-perform the baseline expectation of the electorate. But it's also true that a huge part of our electoral success the last 25 years is because Republican candidates are truly insane.
