I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

My cortisol levels spike hourly as I hear the words “breaking news” and read about concerning new directions the country is taking. It’s overwhelming (the point!) so I try not to disconnect, but take breaks to digest the vile dystopian gruel we’re fed and I look for cats.

I taught The Handmaid’s Tale, 1984, and Brave New World in AP Lit/Comp. Starting in 2006, students would prep for and hold a debate about which society had the best chance of coming true.

I stopped that activity in 2017.

In 2025 it wouldn’t even be a debate.

As much as I love hearing from people outside of the U.S. who say they’re heartbroken for those of us who didn’t vote for this D-list reality show of an administration, I’m heartbroken that the #fafo phase has to be experienced by ALL of us.
