This certainly fits and makes sense.
In a universe of super powered ship phasers and photon torpedoes, I figure it's also a benefit to have a strong shield generator.
Total aside - Dan Carlin's history podcast has some great recaps of old battleship battles I can recommend if interested.
iirc, the Enterprise is one of Starfleet's most powerful spacecraft and often patrolling the Neutral Zone.
Starfleet for the most part seems to not want to escalate despite supporting the occasional spy mission. Many precarious destabilizing situations /w Klingons, Romulans, + unknowns of the Borg.
Let's make it so! It fits our gameplay really well too!

Ah dude that's rough... As a last ditch hope, you might double check the gpu connection. I had some scary issues similar to what you describe + a GPU fan going from 0-100. I pulled out the GPU, reconnected, and tighten the support beam and it was good again.
