Maybe it's all of the above. I believe we have the gift of feeling it all and the deep power of choosing.

liberation might look like the power to unalive your oppressors - experiencing the satisfaction of revenge; the ability to decide their fate; no longer cowering for safety but moving boldly in power in a world that renders your powerless

for others Black freedom looks like death - a deep knowing that this existence is not final and the the true freedom is experienced on the other side.

Black decedents of enslaved Africans in the Americas deserve freedom. And that freedom looks different for each of us.
For some it's the hope/idea of immortality - a deep knowing that very little on this plane of existence has the power to kill you.

11. Some people benefit more than others when there are DEI policies and that could be for a variety of reasons: social identities, financial resources, need, etc.

10. DEI is for EVERYONE because it is about equity and inclusion at large. We all hold social identities and we all can find a place within DEI efforts.
The great mistake of this work was telling white men that this wasn’t about them.

There are some DEI practitioners who operate from a liberal politic, others who have more radical leftist politic, and some who are on the right - once again, it is how people understand and operationalize concepts of DEI and even within the field there is diversity of understanding and execution

8. There is not a universal DEI professional organization. There might be a community in various professions (e.g. chief diversity officers in higher education or Diversity practitioners in medicine, etc) and those roles look different in different industries.

7. Studies have shown that placing DEI or organizational equity work in HR departments are ineffective.

6. Many experienced DEI practitioners in a variety of fields are not resourced or equipped to actually do meaningful change work.

5. There are some organizations making policies rooted in DEI values who do not have experienced practitioners advising, creating and implementing those policies. Remember, many orgs tokenize individuals and put them in roles they aren’t equipped to do
