Today we are also reminded that it's the little things that make the big difference in life.

In my local lore,March 1st is also seen as a dangerous time as the Devil would take the opportunity to empty a bag of fleas into your house if your windows weren't shut . So if you see him be sure to bash him on the head with a leek πŸ˜‚

The first signs of spring are arriving with Snowdrops emerging from their annual slumber🌱
Though considered unlucky to bring into the house across the UK, parts of the Welsh Marches were an exception to this rule; with Snowdrops brought in to purify the house from Winter❄️. #folklore #welshmarches

Who doesnt love lambs?πŸ‘ Their joyous frolicking amongst the tranquil, spring kissed landscape encapsulates the essence of hope, innocence and renewal🌺🌸🌼.

Every gentle bleat heralds in brighter days & the reminder that lambs are considered one of the most magical animals in the Welsh Marches ⬇️

This was then placed under the pillow and the dream of the destined lover would become clear 🩷

To draw them close, folk would prick the bone with a knife , at midnight whilst repeating the incantation:

"Tis not this bone I mean to pick
But my love's heart I wish to prick
If he comes not, and speaks tonight
I'll prick and prick till it be light"

15.01.2026 16:42 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

To combat this they would hang the lamb up in the fork of a tree which made for a gruesome sight for onlookers🌳.

The shoulder bone of a lamb was also considered magically potent for procuring dreams of a desired lover. #divination #magic #Witchcraft

In Herefordshire it was believed lamb skin had miraculous healing abilities espeically when used to cure an adder bite🐍. In fact Farmers were so protective of their lambs that if one unfortunately passed at birth and was buried in the ground, it would bring about a curse upon the flock. So....

In the Welsh marches, depending on which region, it was believed if the head of the first lamb was spotted facing towards you then good luck would follow✨️,where as the sight of the tail end would invoke misfortune. #Spring #folklore #lambs #witchsky #witch

Are you looking for an easy way to bring about more prosperity into your life? Look no further than the Mince pieπŸ₯§.

In Welsh Marches lore eating one mince pie on each of the 12 days of ChristmasπŸŽ…πŸŽ„ would secure you good luck for the new year.

Tintern Abbey is often frequented by spectral monks & echoes of the Devil. With every step the land reverberates with his presence, recounting the times he preached upon the nearby outcrop (The Devils pulpit), tempting the monks of Tintern to submit to a life of delicious wickedness & sin😈 #witchsky

Happy Halloween, Nos Galan Gaeaf, Samhain to all who celebrateπŸŽƒ. This was achieved through various methods including the sowing of hemp seed, eating an apple while simultaneously combing the hair in a mirror in both Shropshire & Herefordshire and the throwing of a ball of yarn outside the window for the future lover to hold.🧢

May it be a blessed night for all🌟

In Monmouthshire a similar belief appears but the stile is said to be haunted by a Hobgoblin like creature/ Pwca instead.

Beyond the festivities of apple bobbing and the lightening of bonfiresπŸ”₯, Halloween was the perfect night to portend the identity of a future lover

In Shropshire this was favourite resort for the adversary to linger & those who passed by would turn an article of clothing inside out to avoid his hostile enchantments😈. The Devils guise was often said to be a black pig; a feature that is similar to the Hwch ddu Gwta of North Wales.

Men in Montgomeryshire would adorn themselves in masks & sheep skin to scare locals while drinking & demanding gifts, known collectively as "Gwrachod"πŸ§™β€β™€οΈπŸ§™β€β™‚οΈ

We also find increased liminality at certain areas which form a boundary, with the most popular being the stile.

The Welsh Marches contains a diverse range of wonderful customs influenced by its hybridised culture.

Some customs include the carving of turnips(Turmit Lonturn) to frighten the locals and to keep evil spirits away.
