A scene depicting the Patagonian scrubland in the early morning, dotted with araucarias and framed by foggy mountains in the background. A pair of Macrauchenia, four guanacos and a patagonian mara are seen among the grass. A Megatherium walks by further away and a crested caracara flies over the scene.

Foggy morning in Late Pleistocene Patagonia.

A small group of diplodocid sauropods walks through an expanse of dry ground, with scattered rocks and puddles. In the background lies a forest covered in mist, and impressive cloud formations in the sky. A few rhamphorhynchid pterosaurs fly by, and a small ornithopod moves away from a puddle as the sauropods approach.

Felt inspired to do a piece inspired by paleoart aesthetics that were common when I was growing up. This is mostly based on a particular one by Mark Hallet, though I think I channeled some other influences as well.

An Oxalaia quilombensis (very close Spinosaurus relative from Brazil) crosses a tidal flat under a dark, cloudy sky. The dinosaur has its tail resting or dragging across the muddy ground, powerful arms, long neck and head and a rectangular-shaped sail on its back giving it a kaiju-like appearance. To its right there's a discarded turtle shell, and to its right, a pile of driftwood. Soft light is hitting its sail and part of its neck making them look brighter and more vivid than the somber looking environment.

You won't be surprised to learn that King Tyrant has some comments on azhdarchids vs. T. rex, including citations of multiple papers on birds stealing food from or harassing much larger, relatively formidable mammalian and avian opponents. There's also some updated size comparisons and art.

Here the result of the St. Bathans fauna stream! This one took us into the early Miocene of New Zealand, the Moa's ark, as some call it. After many formation streams with very few birds this one has probably way too many!

Got home from work and immediately threw together a quick sketch of the new Jurassic dinosaur Baminornis, which preserves the earliest known example of a pygostyle (the fused tail bones that support the tail feathers in modern birds).

Meganthropus palaeojavanicus of Sangiran, Central Java, Indonesia. A hominid that lived during the early-middle Pleistocene.

Brush test from last year. The fur brush is by Ville Sinkkonen, which you can get from his gumroad. Easily my top 5 brushpacks.

A cheetah-like Miracinonyx stands on top of a small boulder in a snowy prairie. In the background, a herd of reindeer move amidst a cloud of dust. Beyond them there's mountains on the horizon, and greenish northern lights on a dark blue sky with faint stars.

Going through an art block since the end of last year but managed to do something involving three things I aesthetically enjoy

โœ”๏ธsnowy grasslands
โœ”๏ธnorthern lights
