The Turm Panther (schmale Blende) also known as the Schmalturm was presented #OTD in 1944. This turret narrowed in the front, saving weight by reducing the size of the heaviest armour plates. Production was scheduled to start in May of 1945. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

A pilot batch of T-34 tanks with spaced armour was due #OTD in 1943. This armour completely protected against 75 mm HEAT and 50 mm APCR rounds, but by the time they reached the battlefield the primary German weapons were high velocity 75 and 88 mm guns. #tanks #History #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1939 a Czechoslovakian officer and a THN-P tank departed for the UK where the tank went through trials. The British considered the Czechoslovakian tank unsatisfactory and were not interested in it. #tanks #history

German Elefant tank destroyers sent to Italy first saw battle #OTD in 1944. These first battles clearly showed the folly in using an unreliable and heavy vehicle in a hot climate and mountainous terrain. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Even though the Americans and Germans most commonly employed this style of vehicle, the USSR also dabbled in halftracks and even tank destroyers and SPGs on this chassis. Orders to test the ZIS-41 on the ZIS-22M chassis were given #OTD in 1942. #tanks #History #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1930 a commission led by the Red Army's chief of mechanization Innokenty Khalepsky was instructed to purchase a production license for a tankette from Vickers. The vehicle was produced under the index T-27. 3297 were built between 1931 and 1934. #tanks #history

The Germans were not entirely satisfied with the Pz.Kpfw.I and work began on an improved tank. #OTD in 1934 it was codenamed La.S.100 (Landwirtschaftliche Schlepper 100, Agricultural Tractor, 100 hp engine). This tank evolved into the Pz.Kpfw.II. #tanks #History

A huge number of German AFVs were captured at Stalingrad in the winter of 1942-43. This led to a decree passed #OTD in 1943 to establish a refurbishment process for these tanks. Pz.Kpfw.III and StuG chassis from here were used to build Soviet SPGs. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Elefant tank destroyers from the 653rd Heavy Tank Destroyer Battalion arrived in Rome #OTD in 1944. Only one company was sent, which seemed prudent as the heavy and fragile vehicle was unsuitable for the heat and mountains of this theatre of war. #tanks #History #WW2 #WWII

Early M4A2 tanks coming to the USSR were riddled with issues, which delayed their use on the battlefield. #OTD in 1943 the receiving department composed a summary of the major technical problems observed with the new tanks. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1949 the Soviet Council of Ministers cancelled the IS-4 and IS-7 heavy tanks, limiting the mass of all future heavy tanks to 50 tons. The T-10 tank was built to meet this new weight restriction. This was the USSR's last heavy tank. #tanks #history #ColdWar

The plausibility of uparmouring the Sherman tank was put to the test #OTD in 1944. An M4A3 was loaded with dummy weights to bring its mass up to 37 tons in order to see how the suspension coped with the extra weight. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

At a meeting of German industry representatives #OTD in 1941, nearly everyone spoke out against installing a longer 50 mm gun on the Pz.III. Such a gun was put into production by the end of the year anyway to deal with new heavily armoured Soviet tanks. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

An order to develop a T-34-85 tank with superior protection was given #OTD in 1944. This tank, later called T-34-85M, had 90 mm thick turret armour and a 75 mm thick hull. The turret entered mass production but the hull did not. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

#OTD in 1945 Soviet Armoured and Mechanized Forces HQ issued a memo regarding M4A2 tanks. Due to the weight gained by the latest variants, two Shermans could no longer be loaded onto one 60 ton flat car and each one now needed its own 50 ton car. #tanks #History #WW2 #WWII

The Char léger modèle 1935 H modifié 1939 commonly known as the Hotchkiss H 39 was accepted into service #OTD in 1939. Compared to the original light tank the H 39 had a more powerful 37 mm gun that was actually useful against contemporary armour. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII
