Text-heavy and colorful infographic titled BREAKING NEWS CHECKLIST with
6 tips on "What to do when information is scarce, falsehoods are rampant
and the story is still unfolding" 1 Mind the gap: Keep in mind that
thereโs often a gap between what the public wants to know and the verified
information available. Unconfirmed or completely bogus content often rushes in
to fill that gap. 2 Beware bad actors: Remember that bad actors often
capitalize on breaking news situations to spread falsehoods for easy likes and
shares. 3 Do a quick search: This is often your best defense against
misinformation. 4 Look for evidence: Claims that make bold assertions but
provide no links or other evidence should always be approached with caution. 5
Seek credible sources: Be intentional about looking for credible news and not
relying on social media algorithms to bring you updates. 6 Practice patience:
Quality journalism and verification take time. Be ready to follow news
developments over time.
๐จ In just one week, 2026 has already been full of major breaking news. As a reminder, reporting on & verifying the facts on a developing story take time & bad actors fill news voids with fakes & propaganda.
Here are some basic tips โคต๏ธ

A lost generation of news consumers? Survey shows how teenagers dislike the news media
You don't have to tell Cat Murphy or Lily Ogburn about the attitudes of young people toward journalists.
โSome of this (attitude) is earned, but much of it is based on misperception," says NLP's @peteradams.bsky.social in this @apnews.com story.
โ ๏ธ As our recent survey revealed, 84% of 750 teens surveyed express a negative sentiment when asked what word best describes news media these days.

A social media post reads, โBREAKING: Montrealโs shiny new electric school bus? Burst into flames. How many โtoxic fumesโ did that pump out? Probably erased 1,000 EV bus emissions in a single fireball. Imagine turning the whole country into rolling fire bombsโ and features a video of a school bus fire. The News Literacy Project has added a label that says โMISSING CONTEXT.โ
โ๏ธ YES: A video that shows an electric school bus fire in Montreal is genuine.
โ NO: The video is not evidence that electric school buses are prone to fires or more dangerous than traditional buses. And the fire was not caused by the EV battery.
