I did the 5k parkrun near me today and had very little left in the tank by the end. Consequently, missed the funnel and ended up adding 30 seconds to my time 😞

I've spent some time today sorting out letter tiles ready to assign values to each one (like Scrabble) so we have a very clear non normally distributed population from which we sample. We can then calculate the mean score of our samples and do a Central Limit Theorem experiment for #mathstoday

I just want to give a massive personal thank you to you, @coachbennett.bsky.social At the end of Aug I decided to start running. I'm 51 and very overweight, but felt like I could give it a go. You sir, have coached and motivated me to run local 5k parkruns, 45 mins long runs and today a Fartlek! πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»

Yes, just search on TES for srwhitehouse and De Moivre. Top tip, change your printer settings to be grey scale and it prints beautifully, in the regular settings mine had a few font issues!

In #mathstoday me and my Y13 FM students did a fun tarsia puzzle from @susanwhitehouse.bsky.social on De Moivre's theorem 😁

We're about to start our interrail adventure. What a better place to start than here. The George Stephenson statue outside of the station in the town where he is buried πŸš‚

Do I need to keep asking Gemini to narrow the focus to be something that can be marked and suitable for both engaged and disengaged learners?

I asked Gemini... Oh the irony

I really don't know, but is it better than a) using AI and cheating, b) not doing anything? Maybe giving them the opportunity for success might be sufficient. I think with all homework, don't let perfect be the enemy of good

I haven't fully thought this through, but would flipped learning be a useful replacement? I don't know exactly how, but the homework would have to be something that has use without being able to be cheated

Maybe

Indeed. It's always interesting to see the big picture as often our own experiences don't reflect the norm

Oh my goodness! My small sample of local schools and online tutees must be very skewed. Thanks for this. Really interesting

No worries. I'm finding more and more schools do OCR. Maybe I'll have to start making "best guess" predicted papers next year 😁

@jrub.bsky.social I am so grateful you posted about this book. I'm using it today for the 1st time! My plan is to infiltrate the regular exercises with a few of these everywhere I can. #mathstoday should bring a smile to some faces

For years, I simply said "centimetres squared", but over the past 2 or 3, I now find myself saying "centimetre squares" or "square centimeters" and sometimes 2 or 3 with the emphasis on the SQUARES

Help needed please. I'm looking for as much WJEC Higher GCSE maths revision materials as possible. I have the past papers, except 2024, but very little else. I have loads of Pearson / OCR / AQA which is fine, but if there exists a pool of revision resources specifically for the Welsh board, msg me

In #mathstoday my Y12s matched up an equation to its graph & its derivative and the graph of its derivative. I know the derivatives should have been called dy/dx, but then I'd need to make my graph axis says the same! Anyway, the point was to identify "key features" between the 2 graphs.

As I was reading this through my initial thoughts was you'd used a Colin the caterpillar cake to show how the area was made of infinitely thin strips! I thought they're going to get a tiny piece of cake each πŸ˜‚

I've started the topic of differentiation in #mathstoday with my Y12 class. The pun works for our local dialect, but I understand it might not translate widely 🀣
