it also matches the context/app you're typing into. Like if I say "Add an init pie file to the dee bee directory" in VS Code or claude code it'll type "add a `__init__.py` and to the `db/` directory." backticks and all.
It's also the only dictation tool I've used that can handle my spanglish lol
Hi @mkennedy.codes - I'm listening to TalkPython 526 with Hugo and you both just mentioned MacWhisper and Wispr for dictation. Have you heard of Monologue? monologue.to

I know a bunch of you have Substacks and while I support you with all my heart, we've known for a while that these guys are right wing dipshits.
If you're looking for a non-fash alternative, Ghost is a non-profit and even has a cool horror sounding name! And its not run by right wing dipshits!

03.01.2025 18:22 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0i just wish it was standard to provide the ebook if you buy a physical version of the book. i'm not going to buy the book twice just so i can have it at home and on the go.
03.01.2025 18:11 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0for most technical books I want a physical copy but what I probably *need* is an e-version so I look for it and inevitably end up finding the PDF for free somewhere and 8 times out of 10 I probably actually didn't need that book i was just curious so i end up not buying it and with the free pdf
03.01.2025 18:11 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Manning is the only publication I've bought books from that does the one thing I've always wanted from any publication: give me the ebook if I'm buying the print version.
all i want is to give the author some money for their work and be able to read the book however i want.
i love the pico family of tools for this: picovoice.ai
it's not totally open-source but it's totally local and private. it also runs pretty smoothly even on my little raspberry pi zeroes. I think it even has streaming capabilities. i mostly use it for speech-to-text and it's pretty nice
One place where LLMs are useful: generating commit messages, given that:
1. You understand and can evaluate the message
2. The scoped code change is small
3. Your model is fast enough
Still playing around but this script+ prompt works fairly well out of the box:

I've been using (copy and pasted) andrej karpathy's version of this using @simonwillison.net 's llm tool. it helped that i can just change the -m model to try different ones (local and non-local)
