Anyways thought I’d share this - something that lived with me for so long was really just a bad anime in the end 😭

But these are just my thoughts of the two OVAs and I understand the manga kept going until 2002… so maybe the actual source material is way better.

The specific things that made it feel special to lil sailesh were, in reality, nothing short of a badly realised take or a convenient pool of inspiration the author just picked from as they pleased. Truly disappointing, and weirdly exploitative…? Also, zero brown folks?!

But the major disappointment I had with it was the links to Hinduism. It felt very off and optically made a very important deity like Shiva seem antagonistic - which is downright wrong.

The characters and art were good looking… there was a lot of weird beats in the pacing, super basic dialogue, and overall it was very below average - which was really disappointing.

Ever since then, growing up I’ve had a hankering to rewatch it, and as the years and decades have gone by I think my mind really made it better than it actually was. This week I found it on YouTube and watched it all again… it was… not the best.

I was taken aback by the horror, gore, and art style, but thinking about it now - the random associations with Hinduism were so fascinating for lil sailesh. Mentions of Parvati and Shiva - I felt included and it made it even more special and cool!

Remember getting my dad to record on vhs anything remotely cool that would appear past my bed time. It was usually on Channel 4 too. One of them, back in circa 1995, was 3x3 Eyes. I was 12 years old 🥹. It was such a janky recording because our machine was dying. But it felt so special and cool!!!
