My colleague Quentin Atkinson wrote this piece - How Not To Run a University. It is an insanely good read about how managerialism is destroying universities.

Make time for it. Talk about it. Share it.

I’d love to hear more ideas about this. I’ve been brainstorming for my own teaching. How to we stop teaching the brain as a domino chain (where disorders are broken dominos) but instead as a multi-level dynamical system? Starting at the earliest stages? Please chime in! A few thoughts …

Second, I understand there’s a movement in education to think about things like ecology and climate as big holistic dynamical systems (even in grade school). We can learn from that. Anyone w/ pointers, please chime in!

Finished reading @nicolecrust.bsky.social’s Elusive Cures. Very interesting. I wonder, how do we change the way we train our students to help implement the new Grand Plan?

I agree that’s possible as well. Hard to talk about target or outcome, though. But I think there are probably very few genes acting on a particular neural systems? But I am very much not the expert on that

URGENT: FlyBase has lost practically all its funding overnight; even user fees are tied up in denied grant funding. 🀬🀯

'A life-changing experience in my career' - reflections on OxCIN Global Scholars We speak to OxCIN Global Scholars participant Kamilla Souza about her time on the scheme.

"I've always aspired to be a catalyst for change in my research field in Brazil, and OxCIN Global Scholars has made this goal more attainable."

Kamilla Souza talks about her Global Scholar experience and her work with @neuroecologylab.bsky.social on dolphin brains: tinyurl.com/bdcva2zv

Totally agree! New data, and importantly a framework to deal with them, allow us to ask better questions.

We tried to address this a bit in some studies. In the case of the human temporal lobe compared to that of chimpanzee and macaque, is there more of the same or different types of organisation: Eichert et al, 2020, elife

I think that a general measure of encephalization says very little about behavioral abilities

29.05.2025 18:05 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

It's not that size has no role, it's that using whole brain size is too crude a proxy to correlate with any specific behaviour.

I would argue that Krubitzer's work shows most convincingly that changes in function have very specific effects at many different levels of organisation (large areas, more areas, changes in connections, etc).
