Low accountability institutionalism: my darkest fear - The Productivity Institute Giles Wilkes argues that the UK's productivity crisis stems less from weak ideas and more from a government unable to turn policy into action.

With tomorrow's Spending Review looming, @instituteforgovernment.org.uk's @gilesyb.bsky.social warns the real productivity issue isn’t policy ideas, but the system’s inability to deliver. Is it just centralisation, or is govt now too complex to act? productivity.ac.uk/news/low-acc...

Are Muslims really banning dogs in parks? 🤔

Let’s look at this perfect example of how rage baiting works, and how disinformation spreads, sticks, and fuels division, even years after being debunked…

The United States is the richest country in the history of the world. But who benefits from those riches?

Consider: the richest 10% of Americans hold nearly 70% of the nation’s wealth – while the bottom 50% hold just 3%.

See the problem?

It wasn't mentioned in the Chancellor's speech, but the Spring Statement papers contain a major suite of anti-tax avoidance proposals, probably the toughest ever introduced.

I completely agree, but any argument that starts with 'here's how local government is funded...' becomes a harder sell. This type of inequality is essentially baked into the system

Eye-Opening Poll on British Regret over Brexit The Guardian has a story out today about a really gob smacking poll by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) regarding closer relations between the UK and EU, based on a survey of more than...

"68% of Britons would now accept a return to free movement across borders in exchange for regaining access to the EU's single market. Among those who voted to Leave in 2016, the margin for Returning stands at 54-35%. Even 44% of Reform Party voters are in favour of it."

💯. I have some hope that we can 'reinvent' Sure Start, but local government finances are so dire at the moment.

Whilst there might be *some* valid reasons for this, I bet there are many more invalid ones. This type of structural health inequality is why deprivation has multiple indices and must be a key determinant of how scarce public resources are allocated.

The impact of NHS Talking Therapies on monthly employee pay and employment status, England - Office for National Statistics The change in monthly employee pay and employee status attributable to completing NHS Talking Therapies treatment in different time periods after therapy, compared with one year before first therapy.

Really good results for those who recover following treatment. But as a Nuffield report of April 2024 showed, far lower proportion of those from poorer decile recover (42%) than those from least deprived areas (55%)

Two cats sleeping pressed against each other on a sofa

Two cats sleeping pressed against each other on a sofa

Is this a) tender affection between two non-sibling cats or b) sheer stubborn, bloody-mindedness and a refusal to cede any space on one blanket?

Happy Caturday/Saturday, everyone.

If only Louise Haigh had repeatedly kicked her partner…

Or been arrested for numerous sexual assault charges

Or been found to have frequently bullied her staff

Then maybe she’d still be in her position.

Today is Equal Pay Day - the day when women effectively stop getting paid because of the gender pay gap.

At current rates it will take 16 years to close this gap.
