In this illustration for my upcoming Oz book, it turns out when Zinnia wished death into Oz, it accidentally cost someone their life. Now she has to live with that guilt.

Scraps, the Patchwork Girl, waits behind a tree as Woot and Zinnia travel up the Yellow Brick Road of Gillikin Country, the shortest of the roads and a little off-route, but the easiest way through the wilderness. How dare they go on an adventure without Scraps!

As Woot the Wanderer and Zinnia travel northward through Gillikin Country of Oz, they’re about to be ambushed by an old companion, Scraps.

In “The Magic of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, Glinda gifts Princess Ozma a dress made of “spun emeralds”. How she was able to make thread out of emerald is never quite explained, but let’s just chalk it up to magic. These long gloves are from that outfit, and Ozma gave them to Zinnia so she doesn’t instantly kill everything she touches with her hands. They’re supposed to be bright green, of course. I tried my best to make them still look shiny and sparkly in greyscale. It’s an important character development for her, adding the only real color to her wardrobe besides shades of grey, courtesy of Ozma herself. Symbolic of Ozma’s protection of Oz.

The Winkie beekeeper Meghur declares about his son, “I wish he had been at least as old as this boy here when that spell hit.” Woot, across the table, gives a sheepish look, while Zinnia watches in mild amusement.

This is a scene in my novel where Zinnia and her friends stop to spend the night with a family of bee keepers, who’s problem is that when the spell that keeps people in Oz from aging took hold, it left their son a baby for over a century, not even old enough to safely eat honey. #WizardOfOz #ArtSky

Harry pulls on Nephthys’ headdress only to find it’s connected by an elastic band which painfully snaps back onto Her head, embarrassingly. After this Nephthys drops a letter for Harry to give to Her son Anubis. Most people would just throw a bunch of random hieroglyphs together for this and call it a day, but I went out of my way to make it actually grammatically accurate, I have friend who studies ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs who helped me, B. Niall Bjørn Nielsen. I posted the whole grammatical breakdown on my webcomic’s website. So basically it says: This is your mother, Nephthys. I wish to speak with you. Please, meet me at the oasis. Love, Nephthys (Ending the letter like that is a bit of a joke of course).

Zinnia has just dug herself out from under an avalanche that she was buried under for twenty years (because you can’t die in Oz), and is in no mood for her neighbor Lan’s silly conspiracy theories about Glinda the Good being evil.

Nephthys pecks at the window, as Harry presses his face against the glass and wonders why there’s a bird in an inferno. Meanwhile Medjed’s thinking about the bonus he could get from Osiris if he apprehended Set. The Grim Reaper (aka Gevatter Tod, or “Todd” for short) enters and explains that vacation he won at the end of Episode 4 has been cut short because the death rates are up and the Death Department is understaffed. He elects to bring Nephthys inside, which Medjed is not thrilled about.

Zinnia, Woot the Wanderer, Scraps the Patchwork Girl and Chocolate Chunk the giant hamster make their way down the Yellow Brick Road in Winkie Country (where the land is yellow). Looming in the background is the hill across the border in Quadling Country upon which Zinnia’s hometown Flutterbudget Center rests, and the Emerald City can be seen in the distance.

Here’s the cover art for my upcoming novel “Zinnia’s Wish” by Kamui Ayami. Set in Oz in the 2020s, and based heavily on the original book series, it tackles the issue of immortality in Oz and its many drawbacks.

The God Set confronts Wepwawet while Harry looks on in bewilderment. Set is hated for killing his brother Osiris, but Set accuses everyone of holding an unfair grudge over the whole ordeal that was thousands of years ago now.

In this pencil sketch Fievel stands holding two cork guns and looking silly with his hat inside out, the implication being that it was only in his imagination that it looked like a cowboy hat. There’s a little tag on the inside of the hat reading Made in Russia.

It’s St. Patrick’s Day at Ms. Stacy’s kindergarten class in the year 1992, but Billy is wearing only red and blue, while his classmates eye him cruelly. I based a lot of this on my own elementary school, which had an owl as its mascot and were called the Hidden Valley Hooters, and was once vandalized with a pair of breasts just like in this picture.

Poor Billy gets pinched by several of his classmates, until visited by a shadowy figure.

The mysterious Lackey encourages Billy on the path to being a bully. As we know now, the Lackey is one of those Shadow People who usually go after sufferers of sleep paralysis, but has found a way to feed off the suffering of bullying victims.

On this day in 1992, Billy became a bully, as told by this short comic I drew in 2021. Don’t forget to wear green, or your nonconformity will be punished. #Webcomic #ArtSky
