This is Worsley at the console for FERUT, the first digital computer in Canadian history. Among other things, it was used for atomic energy equations at Chalk River and St. Lawrence Seaway calculations.

EDSAC is considered the second digital computer ever built. Worsley helped prepare its first run and wrote the report on its first operations.

Early in her career, Beatrice Worsley was a lieutenant working for the Naval Research Establishment. She spent more than 150 days at sea conducting experiments on hull corrosion. In this picture, she is working onboard the minesweeper HMCS Quinte.

It is #BlackHistoryMonth. Peggy (fl. 1766–1827) was one of the hundreds of Black people enslaved in Upper Canada. She and her children were held in bondage on Peter Russell’s estate & farm. Surviving documents attest to her resistance to subjugation.

At 10am on February 25, 1931, members of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) walked off the job. Highlighting poor working conditions, long hours, and low wages, hundreds of women continued their strike for two and a half months.

On this date in 1896, Hart Massey died. He was one of the richest men in Toronto and scion of the famous Massey family that produced a Governor-General and an Oscar-nominated actor. He also commissioned the construction of Massey Hall in honour of his late son, Charles Albert.

In 1888, Parkdale voted 467-339 to join Toronto. However, locals complained that non-residents had swung the vote - at this time, people were allowed to vote anywhere that they owned property. As you can see below, this debate incited strong emotions.
