Is rag-tag ever used outside of SFF/RPG contexts now? Like, it’s always a β€œrag-tag group of X” off to hunt the MacGuffin, right?

Block by block, our South Minneapolis neighborhood got through February by tapping our networks to cover rent for immigrant families, but rent is due again on Sunday and we need to raise at least $26K to make sure our neighbors aren’t evicted givebutter.com/corcoran-nei...

I find it very strange to think about lost civilizations where people just had quite a chill time for generations and generations across millennia, living lives as if their world was eternal.

Every so often I am harsh with and/or mute someone on here. Not that often, but last time it was family, and it has me thinking about why I don't do this often but indeed sometimes do it.

This is a thread about what "stand up for yourself" means to the inexperienced and to the experienced.

I lost it about 1200. I could still understand a few words, but lost enough of the context that I wasn’t sure what was happening

After several years of being able to easily edit posts on Mastodon, it drives me wild that Bluesky doesn’t have that functionality

It’s not a big deal! Each post that’s been edited has a post history so people can see what’s been changed! It should be available here!

How far back in time can you understand English? An experiment in language change

If you liked this experiment, I published a full piece today in the same vein: a text that gets 100 years older with every section, from a modern blog post to a medieval chronicle.

It's a single story spanning 1000 years of English. See how far you get.

I love this question b/c it helps students evaluate what they already know & what new thing we just did together that they can now use when they’re practicing

It’s both an β€œahah!” moment for the student, and a chance for me to learn more about the way they think in the practice room apart from me

A favorite question to ask when teaching is: β€œWhat did we do in here together that you wouldn’t have thought to do on your own?”

A primary goal for me is to teach students how to teach themselves. I want them to be as independent as possible and have the tools to learn and play music on their own

Lennie Donino famously composed no music at all, making him the most minimalist of the minimalist composers. Philip Glass said of him, β€œHe he he he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he he he he he he,” but at this point we began to suspect he might have just been laughing.

Tell us the topic we must debate!

WITCH 3: How do you put in the ghee?

"Which king rules Angmar?"
"Correct."
"No, I mean which king."
"THE Witch-king, technically."
"Who?"
"The Witch-king of Angmar."
"That's what I wanna know!"
"What?"
"Which king rules Angmar?"
"You...you're fucking with me, right?"

I dunno, I made a pointless meme using Carl Flesch this week, and it gave me dopamine, so here you go?

I plan to use it to express crankiness in an entire range of scenarios

A Ritual For Overwhelm
With nervous system regulation coach, Erica Skone-Rees

you're feeling overwhelmed, remember you're not alone, and this feeling is temporary. Let's shift out of together. This ritual is my go-to practice for moving out of survival mode caused by stress, emotion, or s-ease. By engaging the vagus nerve, this exercise relaxes your mind and body, shifting you from overwhelm to ease.

Picture of person pressing palms together

Pause & Press pause and press your hands tightly together, then release.
Repeat several times allowing your attention to drop down into the sensations of your body, leaving
mental chatter behind.
helpful insight: Did you know that emotions cause a 90-second chemical reaction in the body? After that, any lingering emotion is sustained by our thoughts. So, let's shift our thoughts.

Picture of person hugging themself

Hug & Hold
β€’ Wrap yourself up in a hug, gently rub your arms, and speak kindly to your overwhelmed self.
β€’ Example: "It's okay sweetheart. You are safe. I love you & you're not alone. I'm here with you."
β€’ Reflective note: Remember there are many parts of ourselves present at all times. Your anxious self may feel dominant right now, but your inner wise one and your inner healer are here too. They are the parts that reminded you to try this practice.

Picture of person with one hand over heart and other over belly

Breathe With It
β€’ You are doing a great job.
β€’ Now place a hand on your heart and the other on your belly,
β€’ Take a few deep breaths, at your own pace. Inhale through the nose, and exhale out through your mouth slowly as if you're blowing through a straw.
β€’ Gentle tip: If focusing on your breath doesn't feel helpful, you can try humming and feel the vibration in
your chest and in your hands
