I wonder if the tendency to add lots of busy detail to superhero designs in live action is an extension of the fear that a more direct translation would look too silly. Are overly complex GL rings today's black leather X-Men costumes?

Harry Potter hit at the right place and time to resonate with a young audience that grew up loving it. Kids now have a fundamentally different relationship with it.
