Wow! Ours (Gloucestershire) are not quite there yet - just a few very bedraggled ones.
09.02.2026 08:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Beautiful Green Hellebore, Helleborus viridis, in woodland on the edge of Croydon. π It is a member of the Ranunculaceae, the Buttercup family. What look like green petals are in fact sepals, and the petals themselves are reduced to small tubular nectaries (visible in third photo). #WildflowerHour

Hazel catkins and one tiny, red female flower, in a rare moment earlier this week when it wasnβt raining and the air was still. #Gloucestershire #wildflowerhour

Snowdrops in Gloucestershire β this week, fully open. #wildflowerhour

Tree of the week: an old oak on a Gloucestershire lane.
Endless rain and grey skies, not much wildlife about, but possibly the best time of year to admire old trees in the landscape?

Snowdrops and raindrops. Plenty of both in Gloucestershire this week. #wildflowerhour

The seals and seabirds are wonderful, but this week Iβve written about some of the less conspicuous nature I encountered in these magical isles. stillinthewild.substack.com/p/the-unexpe...

Does the new-term feeling of September ever wane? Not for me, it seems.

The plush wings of a mint moth, about 15mm across, resting in the marjoram at the end of a Cotswolds garden.

My first sighting of a large emerald moth. Beautifully marked, scalloped-edge wings, about 5cm across. Definite highlight of summer moth-trapping in Gloucestershire.
