Delighted to share a new paper, led by the brilliant Hannah Cresswell, reflecting the views of school staff (specifically SENCOs) regarding how they broach initial interactions with parents when they think that their child might be autistic 🧡

March seems far, far away,
but we've a #CRAEwebinar planned with Sarah Parsons, who will be talking about research that seeks to use a more creative toolkit of methods to enable a whole range of voices to be included in autism research.

This meme introduces four ideas in sequence that get more and more mind-blowing. Each idea is illustrated with a more and more brightly lit and explosive brain.

Idea 1 is neurodivergent people have characteristic strengths and talents
Idea 2 is the very fact of neurodiversity and the differences between us is a source of strength and talent
Idea 3 is our notion of strengths and talents is inherently capitalist and needs expanding
Idea 4 is the concept of strengths and talents is completely irrelevant to valuing and respecting all humans equally

These meme challenges the simplistic idea that neurodiversity is a β€œstrengths based” approach.

Yes do identify the things you’re good at and do those things. But no don’t make access to respect and understanding something people have to earn with a specific talent.

So my keynote at #AECongress25 involved a lot of memes to illustrate my points about how to understand and apply the neurodiversity paradigm.

The focus is on LIBERATION from OPPRESSIVE systems and beliefs.

This will work best, I believe, when we COLLECTIVISE our action.

Here we go…

Understanding Autistic Traits with the CATI

Our new study confirms the CATI is a reliable, inclusive tool to explore Autistic traits!

What is the CATI?
The Comprehensive Autistic Trait Inventory (CATI) is a 42-item questionnaire designed with Autistic input. It explores six key trait areas β€” like sensory sensitivity, masking, and self-regulatory behaviours (all traits named or endorsed by an Autistic focus group)

What did we do?
We tested the CATI with over 2,600 adults. Half were Autistic (diagnosed and self-identifying) and half non-Autistic people to check ensure it is a valid and reliable measure of autistic traits for both autistic and non-autistic adults.

Autistic-led and community-shaped
This is an Autistic co-led paper, that was steered by the community which included a review of the original CATI trait names and question wording.

You can complete the CATI or want to know more οƒ  www.cati-autism.com
