5️⃣ When things get complicated, return to the basics.

When things feel messy or complicated, go back to the tried-and-true methods: systematic one-on-one conversations, and tracking assessments and information in power maps/lists. These tactics work.

4️⃣ Trust each other.

Organizing committee members should understand that information they learn from one-on-one conversations and from each other must be kept secure among the organizing committee, unless expressly told otherwise by the coworkers themselves.

3️⃣ Practice, practice, practice!

The core responsibility of the organizing committee is to engage in systematic one-on-one conversations with coworkers about the union effort. Practice for moments when conversations go off the rails or minds blank and a big awkward silence causes panic.

2️⃣ Make sure everyone on the organizing committee strongly supports the union.

Unionizing is a risk, and if someone isn’t sure if it’s worth the risk, they’re not going to be able to get other people to join them.

1️⃣ Identify leaders in the workplace.

Identify trustworthy employees who are respected by and well-connected to their coworkers. With strong leaders as organizing committee members, relationships are already established that will make it easier to achieve widespread support.
