It's definitely rough to get used too, but I feel like the double damage in the harder encounters is somewhat needed to discourage just facetanking them and then healing any damage you took back up from the extra silk you get that way. It gets less punishing once you get some more masks.

It mostly depends on what rules you go by. Actual tournaments are exclusively double battles, so you can see some bonkers things there to abuse synergies. Smogon are the unofficial fan rules for singles, and has different tiers of play to allow less powerful pokémon a chance to shine as well.
