Then add in the advantage of being able to give the book to someone else when I'm done with it and ... feh... e-readers aren't a thing with me

I have to respectfully disagree. I know what goes into these. :) Though I will concede that as a first time exploration of fountain pens and learning if they are for you, a custom hand turned piece of high artistry might be... overkill ?

There are also a lot of folks that will make you a custom pen to your specifications. I'm one. :) , though my shop is currently down for essentially renovations. You might want to take a look at @golempens.bsky.social - and honestly his kitless work is superior to mine. (so far)
