Finally, I also want to send a special thank you to @iniwil.bsky.social, who first approached me about the idea of creating a tool to help local journalists cover science. It was such a pleasure to work with Will (who now happens to be a member of the TON board of directors!) to develop this idea.

It was a joy to work with TON’s deputy executive director @rachelzamzow.bsky.social, who led this project with her usual care and cleverness, and with the talented and all-around wonderful @kaatefishman.bsky.social, who helped develop much of the content.

The Navigator is chock-full of grab-and-go information spread across dozens of short lessons within 10 topics, such as “how to find scientific sources,” “how to navigate scientific data,” and “how to critically evaluate claims.”

With our partners at @innovationrji.bsky.social (especially @sriyareddy.bsky.social and @kataduncan.bsky.social) and Relief Applications, we’ve designed this resource to meet reporters where they are.

The Navigator is rooted in the idea that every story is a science story, whether you’re reporting on crime, housing, education, food, or any other topic. Scientific evidence improves reporting on any beat!

This tool, developed in partnership with @innovationrji.bsky.social and more than a year and a half in the making, is designed for journalists on ANY beat who want to bring scientific evidence, perspectives, and context into their stories. The Navigator takes the intimidation out of doing so!

Not only is Rachel a whip-smart journalist and editor, but she fully embodies the values of community, equity, and inclusion that we try to put at the center of everything we do at TON. She’s a natural mentor and an absolutely indispensable teammate.

I’ve been working with @rachelzamzow.bsky.social at TON for nearly a decade now; 1st as an early-career fellow, then as a freelance contributor and editor, and then as managing editor. At every stage, Rachel has proved herself to be incredibly capable, empathetic, and creative.

Recently, he worked with @themarshallproject.org to set up their St. Louis news team, and was adjunct faculty at @mujschool.bsky.social. Previously Will worked with @mprnews.org, the Racial Reckoning Project, and others.

He does so through equitable collaborations, visual storytelling, audience engagement, product and design development as a consulting journalist, product developer, and multi-disciplinary editor for data, graphics, and audience engagement.

Jeanne won’t be going far though! She’s going to be leading a new advisory group that we’re forming, made up of emeritus board members. www.theopennotebook.com/board-of-dir...

Jeanne has also been in the thick of selecting our @bwfund.bsky.social fellows for the past 13 years, and has championed so many early-career writers who’ve made us proud. In the years to come I’ll always hear her voice, rooting for writers with little experience but a whole lot of promise.

So much of what we do at TON today came out of conversations that Jeanne and I had—not least of which is our story-behind-the-story interviews: We were freelancers trying to figure out how to get better, and we thought “let’s just ask some people whose work we like how THEY did one specific story.”

TON would not be what it is today if it weren’t for Jeanne. One example: That pitch database that generations of students and others learning the ropes have depended on? That was all Jeanne’s idea.

First, my dear friend and co-founder of TON @jeanne-erdmann.bsky.social is stepping down from our board of directors. Jeanne has been at the heart of TON for more than 15 years, since the two of us dreamed up this little project one day in 2009.
