I am deeply dismayed to read that HHS Secretary RFK jr. is cancelling hundreds of millions of dollars in vaccine research (Huffington Post, "RFK Jr. Cancels $500 Million In Funding For Vaccine Development," August 5th). The cuts specifically target research grants to investigate vaccines that use mRNA techniques, which promise not only to speed up development of "jabs" to deal with new Covid and influenza variants, but even tackle cancers. This is just the latest move in RFK jr.'s war on vaccines. He has stripped the CDC vaccine advisory committee of its experts, replacing them with anti-vaccine zealots. This ideologically driven war on science and expertise is leaving the nation vulnerable to another pandemic. I urge you to do all that you can to restore funds for vaccine research. I urge readers of The Oregonian to contact their representative and senators and ask that they do all that they can to restore funds for vaccine research. Sincerely, Stefan Jones

I re-use my LTE as emails to my congresspeople. I write one "call to action" for the editor, another for the members of congress. I then cut and paste the appropriate salutation and call to action paragraph to the contact form / email form.

I've had . . . over a dozen? . . . letters to the editor published in The @oregonian.com since 2017.

Letter columns and opinion pages are popular and get read.

I double-duty my LTEs as letters to congresspeople. Just do a little editing.

I have been using dog poop bags for spontaneous blackberry harvests. It is less than ideal, because the berries get smooshed.

Also, if you pick a LOT of berries, people seeing you carrying the bag assume your dog has had enormous dumps.
