Re parental leave, that reminds me that Australia funds its EI through general taxation, whereas Canada's is a dedicated payroll tax. Payroll taxes widen the tax comparison more between Canadians and Australians, with the latter having lots of unused capacity to enrich benefits if populace wants.

Some payments are out-of-pocket, but Medicare reimburses for most who access public system. The university and parental differences are more nuanced than you have framed but, even if I grant you those, they are rounding errors and don't account for the material difference in tax burden.

Too nuanced & multifactorial to generalize; however, IME speaking with TO drivers it's less about simple resentment toward cyclists & more frustration with removal of finite road capacity for segregated lanes. Going back to shared roadway for all would feel more equitable.

Australia has:
-⬇️ avg income taxes
-⬇️ GST (10%)
-⬇️ council rates on homes (< half of property taxes in 🇨🇦)
- & Medicare
