Nosferatu - pencil and colored pencil sketch

I love making these tiny color sketches before working on a larger piece. Acrylic paints can be tricky to blend, so knowing my palette before I start helps so much. ♥️

Your color palettes are always breathtaking, and really create unique moods for each of your illustrations!

It suddenly got popular a couple years ago, and while I think it's past the peak, it still shows up everywhere. :')

It's everywhere here. I don't mind it in silly things like novelty coffee menues, but was surprised to find it in a book which was otherwise full of business advice lol

I couldn't tell if this was meant as a joke - apparently, they did actually survey for this, so... who knows!

I've been asked by other artists/sellers at events, by students and friends and colleagues, it's just everywhere. :')

Not everyone here takes them seriously, of course, but I've seen everything from cafés with themed menues to dating app dsscriptions, and they do come up in work context, too... ^^'

Of COURSE the "How to Survive as a Designer in Korea" book has a page on MBTI 😭😭

Can't even rank myself because after years of dodging those online tests, I won't cave now.

Five thumbnail sketches with simplified pose and color tests for a Silmarillion inspired illustration. Morgoth is visible as a dark shadow, Luthien and Beren framed by blue and white textiles. Colored pencil. Two extra sketches in the corner are more detailed, testing expressions and poses for the characters in pencil. A stickfigure meant to be Luthien shows how her leg pose doesn't make sense, and "Knees??" is written next to it.

My sketches for 'Stealing a Silmaril' - from where to place Morgoth in this composition, to poses for Beren and Luthien...

... and then: so many textile options. Guess who spent an evening tossing cloth around in front of a lamp to then shoot references.

While this is a mix of styles and media (traditional Korean paints on Hahnemühle agave paper, so...) I raided the local library for books on Minhwa and learned a lot from historical paintings. The flowers and peach tree here are inspired by those. 🪷

Thank you! I really wanted to lean into that contrast for the Year of the Fire Horse... making my unicorn here look like a banked fire. Still at rest, but ready to burn, maybe? I wanted it to feel like it could do anything just after this moment. :)

Hopefully that also applies to 2026 for us ❤️🦄

It's already put away and my desk is back to the usual mess of acrylic paint tubes, too many brushes, palettes and kitchen towels lol
