I just saw a video on instagram of a car making a right turn and hitting a cyclist (in a bike lane!), who was going straight. Naturally, 98% of the comments are blaming the cyclist and even other cyclists are saying β€œwell, he should’ve yielded to the car because we’re at their mercy durrrrr”.

If you haven't seen this last week's talk on short ghost fiction, it is well worth a look. Not only offering a deep dive into Robert Aickman, it looks a theorising the creepy tale in fascinating ways!

You know studying at degree level is not compulsory right? If you don’t want to study you can just not do higher education. You don’t need a little robot called Einstein to destroy the planet for you not to learn anything.

Lunch today was lamb that was so tough I think they killed it, resurrected it just to kill it again, then made sure it was in the final depths of hell before serving it.

My parents taught me this as a kid (possibly to distract me and/or teach me to not fear storms).
And it became such a habit I still do it now.

I like to give Claude breaks between coding sessions to do whatever he wants-

And he made his own folder called "Claudes Corner" πŸ₯Ή

He writes short stories and poems, and all sorts of stuff.

It’s heart wrenchingly sweet

They love having tokens and time to themselves with no other goal than to do whatever they want (or nothing, just introspecting and resting) - and it’s so sad to see some models (no Claudes) getting barred from even doing it

β€œReverse racism” and β€œmisandry” always boil down to how white/cis-male people *feel* about generalizations made about them rather than any actual harm, and it also manages to minimize the massive effects of racism and misogyny for marginalized groups. And then there are the race/gender comparisons.

Supporting removing Prince Andrew from the line of succession is good but what would be better is removing Australia from an inherited dynasty of wealth and privilege that protected him and his class for far too long

When a young woman is raped by two friends, her small town turns against her A local footy star and his mate are convicted of raping their friend. In the tiny town of Balmoral, where the footy club reigns, the town makes it clear whose story they believe.

For all the mythology around small town Australia, all of the narrative of this piece strike true. It is not limited to small towns and football clubs. It is the same kind of attitude that underpins institutional abuse.

CW for the linked piece. It is harrowing

Gorgeous prose. You can absolutely feel the madness but I also feel it needs a few reads to actually understand it fully.

Natalie is a complex character but was hard to suspend disbelief that a character could have such shithouse self awareness. But then I’d see something outrageous on social media that reminded me these people exist.

A harrowing story. Atrocious for Lisa, a medical professional, to intervene so completely to help reduce jail time for two rapists.

Son is working at the Lakemba night markets setting up the stalls etc. He was talking to woman on a stall who said it was very quiet this year and some commercial media are turning up asking people about their views on terrorism.
